21/10/2011 Local Policing Teams: One year on Force Wide
A community focused, 'back to basics' approach to policing has been hailed a success after its first year in operation, police chiefs have said.
In April 2010 Grampian Police revamped the way police deliver their services in line with the force's commitment to Community Focus and quality of service in what was the biggest 785shake up to policing in Grampian for a generation.
Assistant Chief Constable Colin Menzies said: "The44 force committed to the Local Policing – Closer to You concept in an effort to foster stronger relationships with the communities we serve.
"We recognise that the wants and needs of communities vary greatly and the aim was to provide a service tailored to those requirements in order to further improve the quality of life throughout the North East.
"We wanted to not only reduce criminal activity within our local communities but also combat the fear of crime by increasing visibility and accessibility. By doing this we have become more effective and focused towards delivering the results our communities want to see.
"Recorded crimes of all types have been falling and detection rates have improved for crimes of violence, dishonesty and malicious conduct. Overall our performance is very positive and reflects on the excellent work of our police officers and police staff, as well as the high level of support we are given by our communities.
"Our policing model 'Local Policing – Closer to You' has brought us closer to our communities allowing us to listen to concerns, tackle local issues and report on action taken. The hard work of our local policing teams has helped reduce antisocial behaviour by 25% which has made a positive and beneficial impact on the quality of life within our communities.
"These results have vindicated our return to the more traditional local policing model, however, we realise that there will be challenges which lie ahead and are determined to overcome these."
